Mandela, Lennon, Amazon Drones, Sacrifices and
Heroes, and the annual start of the Christmas Season.
I have experienced a series of highs and lows this week. This week of what should have been nothing but festive joy, and cheer, has also been coupled with some sobering realities of sacrifice. Or at the very
least, the remembrance of sacrifice.
Starting with the passing of Nelson Mandela.
A man who sacrificed 27 years of his life for Freedom. Try wrapping your head around that figure. 27 years in prison. All for believing that Freedom, and the end of suppression, is more important than his own freedom. Nelson Mandela knows what sacrifice is all about. 27 years in a prison cell in South Africa does not sound very appealing to me. Yet Mandela sacrificed his freedom, for the freedom of those in South Africa. His legacy will live on, long after we are all gone from this earth.
This week we also remember the sacrifices
of the brave men and women who died on December 7th, 1941 at Pearl harbor.
For those of you who do not know about this significant day in our nation's history, on December 7th 1941 the Japanese empire deliberately, and without warning, attacked the United States Naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, killing 2,000 Americans. And oh yea, World War II started on this day as well. Some 4 years later and 400,00 American lives lost, the war ended. But it all started on this day. Sunday, December 7th, 1941.
"A Day Which Will Live In Infamy" Franklin D. Roosevelt.
While I am on the subject of sacrifices. Earlier in the week I was privileged to attend a private screening of the movie LONE SURVIVOR in Boston. It is the True Story of the Four NAVY SEALS and the mission OPERATION REDWING. Three of whom were Killed in action on June 28th, 2005 in Afghanistan. Also killed that day were 18 other SEALs who died while trying to save the four SEALs. One of those SEALs was from Exeter, NH.
2nd from the Left is Dan Healy from Exeter. He was killed when an enemy combatant fired a RPG rocket into the CH47 Chopper he was flying in. 18 others died in that chopper.
The movie was intense to say the least. And I highly recommend it to everyone to see it when it comes out. I posted a trailer in the video section on the blog this week, Check it out. The War in Afghanistan is still going on. And thousands of Americans are still there and will be there on Christmas and Chanukah this year. So when we are unwrapping presents under the Christmas Tree, brave Americans are sacrificing their freedom and their lives to keep us all safe.
Speaking of Christmas, yesterday marked the annual Christmas Parade here in Hampton. And Yes, they do call it a "Christmas Parade." Imagine that?
I know all of you politically correct do gooders are mortified. "The horror ...the horror". Look can't we just call it what it is. It's Christmas! Lighten up. You know, I always think of my good friend Ed Borowsky when it comes to this silly subject. Ed who is Jewish, said to me once, and I never forgot it.
"Ralph do you know what I say to someone when they say Merry Christmas to me?" I shrugged my shoulders and said "What?"
"I say Merry Christmas to you too!" BAM. Are you smiling? You should be. This nonsense about having to say Happy Holidays all the time is a bit over the top.
I think I said Merry Christmas a 100 times in the parade yesterday.
It was after all, a Christmas Parade, And it was well attended and well received by all. Here's a few
more shots from the parade.
The local Flatbread
Company was there with their Mobile Oven.
The Kirby family was there representing their Pet business "My Dog's Mind" . Look at Mary leading off with her little Santa dog!
Traditionally, no Christmas Parade is complete without the Big Man in Red. And this year's parade had the Old Jolly Elf and the Mrs riding in a classic Old Fire Truck. It was a good day all around.
And so once again, a little play on words, using my mantra of "Surfing Heals All Wounds" by saying "Santa Heals All Wounds"

John Lennon was killed on this day in 1980. That's 33 years ago. 33 years without John Lennon, does not seem right even today. I was, and still am today, a Beatles fan. I loved the Beatles. There has never been another band like them since or before. They were musical geniuses, who changed the world in the pop, and rock and roll genre.
The Lennon McCartney song writing duo of the Beatles was unmatched in it's day. I mean good lord, listen to any of their albums over the years and you will agree.
And the funny thing about the Beatles is, they were not around for that long.
10 years total. America was not aware of them until 1964.
And six years later, they were done. Though they went on to record solo projects, they were for the most part done.
That lunatic that killed John Lennon on December 8th, 1980 also killed the souls of
all the Beatles fans. My soul died a little that day. I was watching the Patriots play the Dolphins on Monday Night Football when I heard the news.
Howard Cosell broke the news to all of the Patriots fans. I was one of them. Stunned and in shock. I think we all were. How could we not be? We all collectively knew, that there would now never be a Beatles reunion.
The Dream was over.
Patriots came back from behind again this week and Beat the Cleveland Browns 27-26. But we lost Gronk in the process. This game was another INSANE, nail biting, Cardiac arrest, nerve wracking fiasco, that ended with the Patriots coming back from behind. Down 19-3 in the 3rd qtr, they once again mounted this incredible victory. I could use a less stressful week the next few weeks boys. Please. Try and get on the score board in the first half. Please. Thanks.
Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances
OK so did you all see the AMAZON DRONES story this week? Oh my God. You have got to be kidding me. Really? Do they honestly think that Drones will be delivering to our doorstep in the future? Really? I saw this cartoon and as much as I chuckled, I could plainly see this happening.
I'm just saying. This will ultimately drive the future UFO sightings though the roof!. Can't you just hear the future 911 calls. "Yea this is Chester Seabass, and I want to report a Flying saucer outside my home. You all better get a cruiser down here right now cuz I'm fixing to blast that thing out of the sky with my double barrel shotgun."
People will be driving the 911 system operators to jump out of windows if they allow this.
The more I think about it, the more I think we are starting to act like the JETSONS.
Gee I don't think I'm ready for that just yet.
So did you all catch Mike Tomlin from the Pittsburgh Steelers last week as he "inadvertently" stepped out onto the field during a kick off? He claims he was just looking at the Jumbo-tron to see the play better. Really? And people accuse Bill Belichick of cheating?
Tomlin was hit with a hefty fine of $100,000 grand and the Steelers may
also lose a draft pick or two. That's serious stuff right there. Look I know a lot of the players are always checking themselves out on the jumbo-trons.
They do it after each play. But I somehow think Tomiln knew exactly what he was doing as he clearly impeded the runback of the opposing team player. I don't know. What do you think?
I do know that if it was this guy on the field he'd clearly be up to something that was no good. Look I'm not saying that Tomlin is like KSM, I'm just having some fun with our boy here.
And now for my weekly humiliation of Khalid Sheik Muhummed (KSM). Again, I know that the Terrorists do not coach in the NFL. But that doesn't stop me from messing with KSM. Look I'm just trying to have a little fun and entertain you all with some crusty humor at the expense of this evil SOB.
So once again, let's all take a minute, and enjoy the weekly humiliation of the mastermind terrorist who killed 3,000 innocent civilians on September 11th, 2001.
